How to decide on the stream after 10th – Science/ Commerce/ Arts

Taking the decision of the correct stream is a crucial factor. It will be disastrous if you choose a wrong field which doesn’t interest you. Switching on to another field later i.e. after 11th or 12th will cause difficulties in understanding the subject and scoring in exams. Any foundation built on a weak base and unclear CONCEPTs cannot build a strong future.


If you love maths and most importantly science (mainly physics and chemistry part of it) then you can surely go for the science stream. Biology and mathematics would be optional. Either you can choose both or any one. (You can choose from either of the two, or both.)

Subjects in science stream

  1. Physics
  2. Chemistry
  3. English
  4. Maths
  5. Biology
  6. Computer science
  7. Other optional subjects (languages)

Physics, Chemistry, English and computer science are compulsory subjects. For all other subjects you have options to choose

Group 1 of subjects:  Physics, chemistry, maths, optional subject.

Group 2 of subjects:  Physics, chemistry, biology, optional subject.

Group 3 of subjects:  Physics, chemistry, maths, biology.

Courses after 12th for group 1 of the subjects:

  1. Bachelor of Engineering ( Admission through entrance test- IIT JEE, AIEEE, state level tests)
  2. Pharmacy ( Admission through entrance test- GPAT)
  3. BSC
  4. Maritime courses
  5. BCA- MCA ( Admission through entrance test)
  6. Architecture ( Admission through entrance test)

Courses after 12th for group 2 of subjects:

  1. Medical (MBBS, BDS, BAM etc.- Admission through entrance test)
  2. BSC
  3. BSC nursing.
  4. Pharmacy. ( Admission through entrance test)
  5. Paramedical courses.

Courses after 12th for group 3  of subjects:

You can opt for any of the subjects under group 1 or group 2.



If science doesn’t interest you but you are good at maths then taking up commerce stream will be a big advantage for you. However, pursuing commerce without maths can also be done. Previously it was believed that the cream of students take admission in science stream and the next lot goes to commerce. But, it is not true anymore. There is a lot of demand for good commerce professionals in the market and they are also offered high salary packages just as engineers or doctors.

  1. Economics
  2. Accounts
  3. Business studies
  4. English
  5. Maths
  6. Statistics
  7. Information practices

Courses after 12th

Post graduation in any of the above courses or completion of any of the specialization courses  (CA/ICWA/ CS/ CFA ) can get you to your dream job and  a big pay package. You can work in a bank, financial consultancy, insurance company, stock exchange, equity research companies etc. You can also start your own consultancy. Specialization in Economics and statistics will make you eligible for RBI (Reserve Bank of India) jobs and for civil services (IAS) exams.

Some of the institutes offer BBA and MBA together as an integrated 5 years course.

LAW Courses:

It is a 5 years program and you have to prepare for CLAT (Common Law Aptitude Test) to get admission into a reputed college in India. It can be pursued in the following combination with undergraduate courses:

  1. Com + LLB
  2. BBA + LLB
  3. BA +LLB

ARTS Stream.

If you get fascinated by history, geography, have a knack for learning languages. If you have a creative mind and out of the box thinking capability then Arts stream is just for you. Here you can unlock many new unexplored fields or do something new in the existing field. You can also choose this stream by elimination. If you don’t like science, maths and commerce subjects then just go for it.

Courses offered under this stream are generally BA & MA.
